What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative brain disease that affects memory, thought and behaviour. Although it generally develops after the age of 65, it is not a normal form of ageing. It is the most common form of dementia.

Alzheimer’s causes microscopic alterations to the tissue of certain areas of the brain and a progressive and constant loss of acetylcholine, a chemical substance which allows nerve cells to communicate and which is also involved in mental activities involved in learning, memory, orientation and thought.

Many factors come into play in the development of Alzheimer’s, such as age (it generally affects those over the age of 60, although has been diagnosed in patients under 40), sex (it is more common among women), family history, genetics (certain gene mutations) and environmental factors (tobacco, high-fat diets, etc.). There is currently no definitive evidence about how to prevent the disease’s development.

Although there are many symptoms, the majority of patients experience significant memory loss which affects their ability to conduct everyday tasks along with confusion, feelings of disorientation in familiar environments and problems with speech and/or writing. Only a professional team may make a precise diagnosis of the illness.

Alzheimer’s is generally an illness which is slow to evolve and there is currently no cure for it. There are, however, various pharmacological treatments such as therapies to exercise the memory, mind and social skills which can slow down its development.
